Young Guns 3: Last Ride Script (Fan)

Script by James Davis

OPENING SCENE

[Wide open desert. Old, cracked land under a burning sun.]

An old man rides a horse across the barren land — dusty hat pulled low, long gray hair whipping in the wind. It's BILLY THE KID — or at least, who we think is Billy — pushing 70 but still with fire in his eyes.

We hear his voice narrating:

BILLY (V.O.)
"They said I died young. They said I never grew old. Truth is... they never knew the half of it."

CUT TO:

[In a modern day small town bar.]

A rugged man in his late 30s — military haircut, tactical stance — sits at a table with a few others.
These are former special ops soldiers, worn by war, but sharp.
The leader is JACK, tough but carrying sadness deep in his eyes.

JACK
"He’s out here somewhere. Hiding under another name. They called him Billy the Kid... now he’s just an old man lost in the desert."

[They slam a picture down on the table: A grainy shot of an old man on horseback.]

Their mission: Find the man who abandoned them — the legend.
Jack believes Billy is his father, and he’s desperate for answers.

MONTAGE:

  • The squad tracking down clues — old ghost towns, secret hideouts.
  • Flashbacks of Billy’s old gang — Doc Scurlock, Chavez, Dirty Steve — all riding with him again, laughing and shooting, just like the old days.
  • Strange moments where Billy seems to talk to his dead friends — but no one else is around.

TWIST BEGINS:

As Jack and his men close in, they find less and less evidence that Billy is actually alive.
Locals talk about an "old crazy man" who rides around talking to himself.
Jack starts questioning reality. Is Billy even real anymore?

THE BIG REVEAL:

Billy sits at a rundown house — talking around a campfire to Chavez, Doc, and the others.

But as the camera pulls back...
The chairs around the fire are empty.

He’s alone.

His wife comes out of the house — a tired but loving woman. She touches his shoulder gently.

WIFE
"Come inside, sweetheart. It’s late."

Billy looks up, confused — and when he looks back at the fire, his old gang is gone.

Inside the house, we see military medals on the wall — Jack’s medals.

Framed is a picture of a smiling young soldier — Jack — with a folded American flag hanging beside it.

Jack is dead.
Billy's son was killed in war years ago.

Billy never coped.
His mind broke, clinging to the past, creating a fantasy where his friends were still alive — and where his son was still out there, searching for him.

ENDING SCENE:

Billy stands at the window, looking at the desert one last time.

BILLY (V.O.)
"Maybe the world moved on without me. Maybe I got no place left but dreams. But if dreams are all I got... then hell, I’ll ride 'til the end of 'em."

Fade to black.

TITLE CARD:
"Dedicated to those lost to war, and the ones they leave behind."
